Vermillion is SilverBirch Studios proprietary high performance, multi-platform game engine. Decades of game design and implementation experience have resulted in the development of this powerful, flexible and portable game engine suitable for multiplel uses, supporting the following platforms among others: PS2, PSP, PS3, Wii, DS, Xbox, Xbox 360, Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, JAVA, BREW and Symbian.
The architecture of Vermillion is very modular, and as a result it is easy to add or remove components to suit the style and genre of the game being developed. Extensions developed for one game are easily used or adapted for others, or can be removed without negative impact. The modular architecture also makes it easy to support multiple platforms with little overhead. One of the most notable elements of the Vermillion engine is its speed. Vermillion engine games can take full advantage of faster systems, but will also perform well on earlier generation hardware and older PCs. The lack of overhead in the engine means more execution cycles, more memory and more cache are available for game logic and assets.

Especially on the limited resources of most game consoles, the lack of overhead in Vermillion means that games can be larger, more detailed, and just generally better.
Key features of Vermillion include:
• High-performance, robust engine with minimal space and execution overhead
• Modular architecture, scalable design to accommodate different performance and memory requirements
• Runs on anything that handles floating-point math.
• Support for a large number of platforms; designed to run on anything available now or in the next fifteen years
• Excellent library support; API designed for speed and ease of development, with many useful
support systems
• Designed to mesh well with middleware
• 3D graphics module is a portal engine with bezier-based curved-surface rendering
• Full 2D GUI support
• Support for both custom and internal scripting

Handheld systems such as the Nintendo DS, GameBoy Advance and GP2X, as well as mobile phones and PDAs require a lighter, faster game engine. Vermillion Handheld fills this role; it is based on the Vermillion engine, but tweaked and optimized specifically for systems with tighter resource requirements.
Vermillion Handheld has been developed for systems with no floating-point math support, constrained memory and simpler graphical hardware. Consoles of the Saturn / PlayStation / N64 generation also fit into this category; Vermillion Handheld is perfectly suited for such hardware.
Vermillion Handheld is API-compatible with the full Vermillion engine except where functionality differences in the hardware platform dictate otherwise. Vermillion Handheld games are therefore easily ported to full Vermillion.

Key features of Vermillion Handheld include:
• High-performance, robust engine with minimal space and execution overhead
• Modular, scalable design
• Designed to run on absolutely anything for which you can get a C compiler
• API-compatible with Vermillion
• Peer-to-peer and Wi-Fi networking support
• Full support for platform-specific features such as the two screens and stylus of the Nintendo
DS, or GPS capabilities in other systems
